California Management Review is a quarterly management journal affiliated with the Walter A. Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley. Established in 1958, it presents research-based content intended to facilitate the communication of contemporary scholarly findings in the field of business, while simultaneously addressing current issues that are of immediate concern to managers.[1] CMR has been a publishing outlet for notable individuals in the business industry, such as David Aaker[2] and Henry Chesbrough.[3] The journal maintains an impact factor of 1.98, situating it, along with other publications such as Harvard Business Review and MIT Sloan Management Review, among the most influential and viable sources of contemporary business research. As of July 2011, California Management Review has entered a partnership with the University of California Press.[4]

The first issue of California Management Review was published in the fall of 1958. Originally conceived as a means for the communication of current research from both UC Berkeley and UCLA, the journal soon came to publish content from other business school faculty, consultants, policy makers, and executives via a peer-review process. By the journal’s 50th Anniversary, CMR had established and maintained an extensive editorial board composed of members of both the academic and business communities.[5]
CMR’s stated mission is to serve “as a vehicle of communication between those who study management and those who practice it.” Published articles emphasize three areas of interest: Strategy and Organization, Global Competition and Competitiveness, and Business and Public Policy.[6] The journal is released in volumes comprising four quarterly issues, with each issue typically featuring several collections of articles written on a particular subject. In addition, CMR will release “Special Issues,” such as Fall 2007’s 50th Anniversary Issue, which address a single subject.
CMR also publishes the Haas Case Series, a collection of case studies written by Haas School of Business faculty and intended for use in educational settings.
Content is available both in print and online, and individuals or institutions can purchase subscriptions, single issues, or individual articles.
Each year, the California Management Review – sponsored by the global consulting company Accenture – selects an article from the past volume to receive the annual “Accenture Award.” Articles are initially judged by CMR’s editorial board. The final selection is made by a panel of business executives based on originality, relevance, and contribution to the study and practice of management. Along with a cash prize, the authors of the award-winning article are invited to Haas School to give a public lecture.[7]
